COME

She asked persistently,
almost daily at first;
then long weeks
before new probings
which trickled into a flood.
And I, with priestly pomposity,
(but meaning well)
rehearsed the great and glorious
canon of our creed.
Until, with clear intent,
she asked me to cut through
the wonders of philosophy
and strike a simpler note.
“What is the way of Christ;
what word condenses
essence into light?”
I thought to choose “forgiveness”
or “redemption” or “pure love”
but then, remembering
the invitation of our Lord,
I knew at once to say
the word is “COME”.
