My Prayer-Poem for the 32nd Day of Lent, The Feast of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, Saturday 20 March 2021
A bishop in Tears Our dear Cuthbert, father among the saints, who saw, instead of heard, by lights in Scottish skies, Aidan’s Aura as he died. Entranced with Lindisfarne, the sea and rocky crags, he longed for priestly solitude; for cave and cell, the comfort of monastic bell. But Father, Lord, Your way is hard, a way of tears; Called as he was to sacrifice and chosen by our Church, dear bishop Cuthbert wept, as many do, when You ignite our fears with biddings unexpected, until, with wary joy, we glimpse the cosmic view.
