My Prayer-Poem for the 16th day of Lent, World Book Day, 4 March 2021

Books surround me
their faces bright, their smiles invite
me to abstractions new.


Books connect me
to writer’s minds as writing guides
them to that rendezvous.


Books restore me
by tears and laughter, purge my mind
and heal my weary view.


Books inspire me
to thoughts unthought for fear or dread
and new horizons too.


Books restrain me
keeping me humble as I learn
what others have been through.
