My Prayer-Poem for the 14th day of Lent, St Chad’s Day, 2 March 2021

We give you thanks for Chad today.
In humble service he,
in six hundred and sixty nine,
began dutifully
to serve as Mercian Bishop
(quite uncanonically!)
hands laid by he of Winchester
known as Bishop Wini.


But, daunted not and Spirit filled,
in all humility
St Chad spread the good news on foot
far as the eye could see,
honoured the martyrs of Lichfield
from three hundred and three
when Diocletian massacred
a thousand ruthlessly.
